Assalam-u-alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Baraktuh Shaykh

Regarding time of intention to fast, I remember this was explained by you in the course, but I still have questions about some of the things that I did not understand.

For a fardh fast (that is during the month of Ramadan), if I prayed taraweehs at night and before sleeping, I had intention to fast for the next day, but on the next day, if I wake up late and time for azan for Fajr has passed, will my fast be valid for that day?

As you told in the lecture, I understand that we can decide to fast, during the day, for a nafl fast.

(Clarify me on these, if I'm wrong)
Is it true that:
1. Qada is a type of fardh fast and does not have conditions such as those of nafl fasts.
2. Qada fast does not have a day fixed. It can be done on any day that suits us. (except disliked days)

Do we have to pray taraweehs for a Qada fast?

As Qada fast can be moved to any day we like, if I pray taraweehs at any night and decide to do a Qada fast on the next day:

1. Is it then compulsory for me to fast on the next day?
2. If before sleeping I intend not to do so, and leave it for any other day in the future, is it ok?
3. If I sleep with the intention, and in the morning before Fajr, I intend not to do the Qada fast on that day?
4. If I sleep with the intention, and in the morning, if I wake up late after Fajr azan is passed, and then intend not do the Qada fast on that day, is it alright, or will it be a sin for breaking a fardh fast?

Wa alaikumusalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

There are a different issues in this post:

- Intention: As long as you had intention the night before to fast next day, then it is fine and fast next day in Ramadan is valid.  Some scholars even said that if your intention was done at the beginning of Ramadan to fast everyday and it was never interrupted due to sickness or travel etc, then that intention continues for each day of Ramadan (as Sheikh Ibn Utheimeen said).  At least so long as you did the night before then its all good, inshallah.

Qada issues: Qada is not like a Nafl fast in many respects.  So you still need to make intention for it before beginning of Fajr time.  It is a sin to break a Qada fast as it is making up compuslory fast.  But a difference is during Qada of Ramadan that is done outside Ramadan, if one breaks the fast due to sexual intercourse, he/she does not have to do kaffarah but only another Qada.  This is due to the sanctity of the month of Ramadan not being therein.  Scholars do have other sayings besides this on this matter.

Another difference is during Qada fasting being made up outside Ramadan, there is no taraweeh.  So, if anyone missed Ramadan still try to pray taraweeh during Ramadan.  Even if you are travelling try to pray some, the Prophet (s) prayed qiyamulayl while tavelling.  Even if sick but can manage to pray taraweeh sitting down or lying down try to it is to do it in Ramadan.

And Qada day is not fixed rather it should be on the earliest time possible without too much delay unnecessarily.  So you can delay a few days but not too much.

Some of the last set of questions do not apply with regards to taraweeh and qada.

Lastly, if you did intention night before to do qada next day, but before suhur changed your mind, then there is no blame.  But if you did intention at night to do qada and then during fajr time when the fast has already begun you change your mind, then understandably the fast is then broken and for a Qada fast, it is not permissible to break it for no valid reason (valid reason: sickness, travel, pregnancy, etc).

I hope those answered the questions, barakallahu feekum.

Wassalamu alaikum
