Salam Alaikum wrwb,

I was unable to post in the "fast breaker" topic as no one had started posting in that topic yet and i could not work out how to post there. I just wanted to know, does getting any type of injection break the fast?

Assalamu alaikum

The Scholars who I learnt from taught that injections with respect to breaking fast are of following type:

1. injections that are nourishing to the body - such injections break the fast as this is like nourishing the body with food and drinks.

2. Injections that are not nourishing to the body - such as antibiotics etc.   These ones whether they are given intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous, they do not break the fast as they are combating disease or other issues and not at all nourishing they body with food or drink  energy.  Note: Those scholars said, Insulin injections for Insulin dependent diabetes patients falls in this category.  Perhaps a way I can explain this is that, Insulin is merely helping the cells in the body to uptake the glucose that is ALREADY present in the body from before suhur time and not adding new glucose.  Normally the body has insulin to uptake glucose throughout the fast, however, a person with this disease state does not have insulin and so is being injected.  This is what sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Utheimeen and others have said.

Allah knows best.
