Assalamu alaikum Sheikh,

Is it obligatory to give zakah on gold that one wears on a daily basis and also that one uses occasionally or is it only on that gold that is left in lockers (without use)?

Wa alaikumusalam wa rahmatullah

Zakat ought to be given on all gold.

If it is jewellery that is used by the muslim lady, some scholars said that one does not need to give zakah on it.  They based this on some narrations from sahabah, however these are not authentic.

Other scholars said, zakah should be paid even on jewellery - gold or silver - whether used or kept in storage only.  They based this on authentic narrations from the sahabah and on authentic sayings of the Prophet which indicate to the correctness of this view.  An example is when the Prophet and in some narrations his wife, saw women wearing jewellery and commented that if zakah is not paid on it, then would the wearer like to have it as a circle of fire in Hell fire.  This was with regards to silver jewellerry and with respect to zakat ruling on paying or not paying, gold and silver have same ruling.

So, the correct view is as these scholars said based on hadith such as this and based on clearer narrations on the issue from sahabah, that zakat on gold and silver jewellery of women is complusory - whether it is used or simply stored.

Wassalamu alaikum
